William John Caparne (1856-1940)
Dawn Mist, Guernsey
Pastel on paper, 224 x 290 mm
Supplied unmounted with its original tinted cartridge backing paper and tissue protector.
In the final decades of his life, Caparne produced hundreds of works depicting the coast of his beloved Guernsey, such as this portrait of Moulin Huet Bay, seen at dawn from the cliffs near his home at Bon Port. Turning increasingly to pastel as his eyesight began to fail, he exploited the qualities of the medium, its immediacy and expressive potential, in capturing the constantly changing aspect of same scene throughout the year. Here, in this evocation of the soft light of a misty dawn as the sun begins to break through, he demonstrates his mastery of the form.
