Product Description
Victor Mathias (British, 20th century)
Mountainous Landscape, 1942
Oil on card, 160 mm x 180 mm
Signed V MATHIAS lower right; signed and dated in ink verso, V Mathias, Aug: 1942
The card support is cut from a Mexican Matzos carton, and appears to have been flattened. A curved crease is evident towards the bottom of the painting.
The work forms part of an extensive series of pictures by Victor Mathias, which evoke an idyllic landscape, reminiscent of southern Europe. Here a prospect opens of mountains with a lake or river in the middle ground and a shadowy form, which could be a rocky outcrop or distant citadel under a rose and yellow tinted sky.
