James Fry (British, 1911-1985), Winspit, Dorset
oil on board, 215 mm x 254 mm
Signed with initials, bottom right. Verso inscribed WINSPIT, / JAMES FRY
A fine, sound image in excellent condition. Some impasto areas with minor craquelure. Unframed.
A study of the rocks and tidal pools fronting the disused quarry at Winspit on the Dorset coast near Worth Matravers, the paint freely applied with both brush and palette knife.
James Fry was a dedicated painter of the landscapes and coast of his native Dorset, regularly returning to the rugged beauty of Winspit cliffs and pools.
Stone from the quarry, one of the many on the Isle of Purbeck, was highly valued as a prestige material in building from the medieval period until the quarry’s closure in 1940.
