Moiseiwitsch was one of the most influential and popular concert performers in the middle decades of the 20th century. A close associate of Sergei Rachmaninoff and friend of Nikolai Medtner, he was particularly known for his fluid and romantic style. Born in the Ukraine, he took British citizenship in 1937 and was awarded the CBE in 1946 in recognition of the frequent concerts he performed for British service personnel during World War 2.
