Directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow
Mounted on black-faced mount card
image size: 22.5 x 29.0 cms
overall size: 30.5 x 38.0 cms
The image is good and stable, but with a slight drip-run towards the centre.
With a 12 minute running time, Hepworth and Stow’s heroic film was the longest running film in Britain at the time, as well as being the first ever film version of the Lewis Carroll classic.
This image is taken from the opening sequence of a film charged with a bizarre proto-surrealism, as befitted its subject. A significant portion of the original film (8 minutes) is held by the British Film Institute, and was restored and released by them as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Alice in Wonderland’s publication in 2015.It may be viewed on the BFI website.
