Product Description

Anthony Colbert (1934-2007)
Vietnam War Series: Father and Children
oil and gloss paint on board, signed and dated Vietnam ‘67
62.5 x 82.5 cm
This is one of a series of works painted by Colbert in Vietnam as part of a commission from Save the Children and The Observer newspaper to record the impact of conflict on women and children in the war zone. The works have great power and authority. These are extraordinary records of the human cost of war, executed with all the immediacy of the war artist, in their jagged brush-work and use of what appears to be military-issue gloss paint. The painting, together with two other works offered by Lloyd Ellis, was shown at the International Artists’ Institute in London in 1967. A catalogue of the exhibition is held by the Tate Archive.
